Further updates on Blip and BAM
Blip: the good news! I wrote to some fair use/remix folks this morning who've been using Blip to host remix videos, and got really positive responses re: vidding and fair use and their experiences there.

Plus, they preface their Fair Use policy with: "Our goal at blip.tv is to reasonably balance the rights of copyright owners and media consumers. We believe strongly in copyright, and we believe that the concept of "fair use" is an important part of a strong and healthy copyright system," before going on to talk specifically about transformative works:

An exception to this rule is if the work as a whole is transformative. Transformative means making something substantially new is created from the copyrighted work.

    and

It will be much easier to prove fair use if you keep a copyrighted clip under a minute or, even better, 30 seconds.

    and

Your addition to the copyrighted work must have some value. You have to say something. It can be commentary, parody, art or something altogether different as long as you can justifiably claim that you said something with the work as a whole.

--all of which seem to me to be potentially friendly for vidders: who uses a clip over 30 seconds? They also allow you to upload multiple files, offer downloads, or--and this is really pretty nifty--let people subscribe to your vids on Itunes.

Blip: the annoying news! Like many of you, I couldn't figure out how to create a network! Short version: you can't. I wrote to them and got the reply that, "Currently we do not offer this functionality any longer. Sorry for the confusion. We'll be updating this page." So for those of you taunted by the "add someone to your network! its easy!"--turns out it isn't so bloody easy.

Bam Vid Vault, OTOH, has a nice familiar friendly networking system, like so, which makes my community-minded heart go pitter pat with joy. But I've heard people be suspicious of Ning, the host service.

Edited to add: And a second after I posted this, Bam Vid Vault sent the nicest welcoming email to new users, welcoming them specifically as vidders. Well, isn't THAT a nice change!

Upshot: I'm using both, trusting nobody, and carrying a big stick. Stay tuned.

    Quick Post: Vids Moving!
I will be moving my vids to blip.tv http://cesperanza.blip.tv/, which to the best of my current knowledge has the best TOS of a bad bunch atm. (Once vids are uploaded, you can network with other vidders too, fwiw. You can't network with me until I've got my vids up!)

Meanwhile, as I was posting this, I saw luminosity reccing bam video vault, a site I don't know but will investigate tomorrow as a backup!

Edited to add, because I laid my hands on it, Blip's Copyright and Fair Use Policy, which I think is not bad at all: now we see where the money vs. the mouth is.

    Total Eclipse of the--WTF?
OK, you've seen other literal videos before, but honestly, this is the be-all and end all of them. I laughed so hard my whole face was sticky afterwards. GENIUS.

    Kink Bingo (omg; facepalm!)
Despite being a) constitutionally incapable of writing short and b) er, kink-challenged? the least kinky slasher I know?--I have signed up for [info] - communitykink_bingo. (Er, and browbeat a number of my friends, because I hate to drink alone. *g*)

What do you say, should I run the card?

Q&A from Time Out (UK, 1996)
I realize I probably ought to post Tennant's Q&A since it has (surprisingly for 1996!) fannish content!

    House cleaning
So I'm trying to get rid of some stuff. But this stopped me for a sec--I was living in England in 1994 - 1997ish, and, for reasons that don't bear exploring at this particular juncture, I met a guy at a party at the RNT. He was a new young actor, and... Well, turns out I saved a couple of things from back then. Hilarious, no?

Graduation, baby! Happy end of Spring Term 2009 to ME, and happy start of fannish summer! Where's the fic, where's my WIPS, where's the art, where's the vids, where's John and Rodney, where's--zzzzzzzz, (okay, maybe a nap first. Just a little one. *thunk* *sleeps with mouth open*)

One more potentially unpopular Star Trek Opinion
Because I haven't seen this anywhere else, I thought I might as well say it. It's something that bothers Curtis and me a lot.

    Art for Sheppard's Law
Lim - on Dreamwidth - made me a cool cover for Sheppard's Law (and posted an analysis of some cool PS techniques); what I love about the cover is the way the numbers create a kind of terror of probability, visualizing the story's fear that John's not going to end up quite himself. (X-posted to Dreamwidth.)

    AO3, Dreamwidth, Etc, Oh My
    * Great post by [info]elz, one of the OTW's head coders, about the current state of OTW's AO3. Great read for an inside view of the code.

    * I'm cesperanza on dreamwidth and I've also snagged sga_flashfic and sga_noticeboard to keep my options open; I've heard people talking about using feeds instead, which strikes me as a good idea; that could be kind of coherent. At some point, I'd like to run sga_flashfic out of the AO3, which has a community and challenge function built in, but I think that's one of the last features in the roadmap. But if anyone has any ideas or suggestions about how to keep fannish communities together and going, I'd love to hear them.

    * I have to say, I really liked the hyper-meta episode of SPN! Are you really surprised? )

    Help a sister out?
For reasons not worth exploring at this juncture, I really need an avi of Sisabet's awesome SPN vid "Falling for The First Time," but her site is down; anybody have it and willing to sendspace/upload it for me? *pleads*?

Edited to add: Gotten! Blessings upon your head [info]gracecourage!!

    Fings Wot Are Awesome
[info]fennegie made the most hilarious art for Sheppard's Law; it's called Future Boy and John, yes, but Rodney; oh, my heart.

[info]general_jinjur posted two new podfics of my stories with really gorgeous cover art to [info]amplificathon ; Transformation & A New Day at Midnight. Both are available in mp3 or m4b formats!!!

One of those days + writerly navelgazing
I'm having one of those days where I do nothing but work and I STILL have 40 things on my To-Do list. God! And that doesn't even count stuff like "Make dinner" and "prep classes!"

Anyway, clearing off my desktop to find stuff, I found an early pitch of Sheppard's Law and was surprised, as I somehow always am, how much of it was there! I really stuck close on this one for all the stupid hell that story was.

Self indulgent writerly navelgazing below the cut )

    PSA
I'm really unduly and stupidly sad about Natasha Richardson's accident, but I have to say, it reconfirms for me one of my base rules of personal conduct, which I hereby share with you: don't ever do anything that routinely kills rich white people. These include: skiing, jumping horses over fences, flying for fun in small private planes, & drunken yachting. Even if they sound like good fun things to do, they are NOT. I feel as a having-grown-up-working-class-person who can barely swim that I am willing to risk my neck for all sorts of things, but not for these things.

    Oh Sci Fi Channel No
Gacked from [info]elz, but if this is true, it is just mind-bogglingly, astoundingly, almost incomprehensibly stupid.

Edited to add: And I will totally be calling it siffy (rhymes with jiffy!)

ETA2: And of course it's all about ownership. Of course it is. *gives middle finger in their direction*

Thank you and GIP and Quantum Mechanics
I'm only now belatedly getting to the awesome feedback for Sheppard's Law. Meanwhile, in what must honestly be some sort of record, [info]rhea314's already podficced the story, which you can find here at [info]sgapodfic or here in podbook form. I haven't even got the story linked properly from my site yet, but I'll eventually host the podfic on my podfic page too.

In related news, this article in Scientific American, Was Einstein Wrong?: A Quantum Threat to Special Relativity made me hop with glee, because:
If, as some argue, wave functions need to be thought of as concrete physical objects, then we need to take seriously the idea that the world's history plays itself out not in the three-dimensional space of our everyday experience or the four-dimensional spacetime of special relativity but rather this gigantic and unfamiliar configuration space, out of which the illusion of three-dimensionality somehow emerges.
Which is to say in the fifth dimension and up, baby. Because "Entanglement may connect particles irrespective of where they are, what they are and what forces they may exert on one another—in principle, they could perfectly well be an electron and a neutron on opposite sides of the galaxy. Thus, entanglement makes for a kind of intimacy amid matter previously undreamt of." Sexy, no? The cat gets a mention, too. \o/

Meanwhile, GIP for the absolutely terrific OTW icon made by [info]astridv. And while I'm speaking of cats and OTW:

    OTW: What I Love
    OTW: buildin ur infrastructure

THESE LOLCATS!! Gacked from [info]kassrachel, and you can get your own OTW LOLCATS here. (I also really love the one about "we just wants to own the goddamned nests *g*)

So, there's a billion things I love about the OTW, first probably that we don't seem like jerks or weirdos in the media as much anymore, and when I hear people talking about fandom, they're fans and not outsiders or anthropologists; second, that we in fandom are building an infrastructure that we collectively own.

I was really moved by that comment in the [info]scans_daily debacle that this sort of thing wouldn't have happened in guy-based fandom, because guys in fandom have sympathetic people at the top, running and hosting their fanacs: whether its Phade from amv.org, or Paul Marino at the Academy of Machinema Arts and Sciences (never mind how the game makers themselves support machinema.) We used to have this security when our Listadmins owned lists on university BBS servers and private servers (giant shout out to people like James Walkswithwind and Seah and Walter at squidge.org, but we haven't had that since the web really went commercial. And now, rather than be shunted from network to network, we can have a central location that belongs to us that won't go away. (Not to mention permanent story links not dependent on a single archivist paying the bill.)

So anyway, BECOME A MEMBER! If you can, donate for the people who can't --everything the OTW does is FREE (FREE FREE FREE FREE: FREE) FOR ALL and not ad-supported, so all those who become members are making it possible for those who can't.
