New Story: Stages of Grief (Sherlock BBC)
Title: Stages of Grief (5589 words) Author: Speranza Fandom: Sherlock BBC Pairing: John/Sherlock Author's Note: One version of a post-Richenbach Falls story. Also, fwiw, I'm going to try to a) get the rest of my stories up at AO3 and b) try to tag them sensibly with old skool tags wot I like myself in order to BE THE CHANGE I WISH TO SEE. Seriously, it is my deepest wish that people will start tagging their fic "First time" and "h/c" and "angst" and "romance" and "drama" and "casefic" and "AMTDI" and "smarm" and all that good stuff! I never took much to tags, myself, but man, now I miss the tags on the old skool archives. Sometimes you just want a 30k first time! Random post of four happy things and one sad thing
1) Awesome Person of Interest finale, woot! There was much screaming and flailing of hands in my apt. I sincerely can't wait to write this. I'm not sure how many more of my buttons they can press before they break me! 2) POI pimping continues apace! I think I have converted Lim but HARD and she's made the first of what I hope will be a billion zillion vids. (Julad said I pimped the show wrong: that I should do nothing but post macros of Reese Woobie!face with great captions. Which I may try soon! Reese's Woobie!face is a miracle of its kind! Icons! I need icons!) WATCH THE VID! FEEL THE AWESOME! 3) I still haven't watched the Fringe finale yet, though I worry a little! Still, I did see at least some squee on my flist and you know, sometimes disappointing shows make for good plot bunnies. 4) Got moving on my poor ignored Sherlock story, finally (HELLO SUMMER): read a delightful one by Greenie (edit: and schemingreader!) called The Holy War. Need to catch up with what's going on in Sherlock fandom, though trying to avoid Tumblr because of Avengers spoilers and: 5) My sad thing, boo: still haven't seen Avengers! I was scheduled to see Avengers TWICE and both times I was struck with sudden illness, so now I'm vaguely afraid to see Avengers! I'm going to have to sneak out and see Avengers when the gods are making mischief elsewhere. You can also read this entry on Dreamwidth ( comments) | | Sunday, May 13th, 2012 | | 8:20 pm |
Bleeding from the Eyeballs
Last...24 hours....of... grading. Please send all the chocolate and a giant bottle of red wine, Malbec or Syrah preferable. Also: signal boosting for those of you in Sentinel fandom: 852 Prospect is on deck to be backed up into the Archive of Our Own, where it will be a separate searchable collection. If you, like me, have changed identities or email addresses a couple of times since the late 1990s, never fear! You just have to contact the Open Doors committee and tell them who you are now and what email address they should reach you at. (If you have an easy link showing them that your TS stories are yours, include it, especially if it's not obvious that you are who you say you are: like, it's easy if Fangirl28@hotmail is now Fangirl28@gmail, which seems to be most people. That being said, don't worry if you were Istanbul and are now Constantinople: there's a lot of Sentinel fans over at the A03, and Pepperidge Farm remembers. :D) While I'm thinking about it, DS peeps: the DSA is on deck too, probably for later this year. You may have noticed that the Due South Archive's database has gotten corrupted, but astolat's had a look at it and it seems like everything is recoverable. So stay tuned for news about that, too. And now all I can think of is alasen's awesome DS vid, "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" which you can find here. It ALWAYS makes me smile. Democrats! HIRE THIS GUY!
This deserves to be signalboosted. I was reading recently about how the Democrats are losing the rhetoric war, so it was a delight to hear this guy. (For what it's worth, I totally like Obama's new slogan, "Forward." I've heard a lot of pundits dislike it, but I think they're not getting what to me was obvious; the implied opposite: "Republicans = Backward." My sense is that this is a lot more terrifying a prospect for women, quiltbag people, and racial and cultural minorities than to the white dude commentators who were like, "I don't get it." *I* got it!) CLAMSSSSS
So Jackie linked me to this fantastic Person of Interest vid by Lithium Doll and I am SMILING LIKE A LOON. Spoilers, kind of--or at least emotional spoilers, for this is a fandom where, like, HE ALMOST SMILED THERE is a spoiler, and as Seah said, Reece is a guy whose solution to most problems is to just drive a truck into you. So yeah, spoilers for guns and NO SMILING. I am in old skool heaven. (Also don't be scared by the song, the song totally works.) (glee! jazz hands) Original post by LD and downloadable version here, and you can also leave feedback for her there! Support the OTW!
So you know, it was about five years ago now (!!!!!) that a bunch of fans formed the OTW. I still kind of can't believe it happened. There's now an archive with 40,000 users. A legal team that's done so much, both publicly and privately ( I just have to say, OTW Legal does so many little things and answers so many small private questions for individual fans, things they don't talk about for privacy reasons. But the awesome is unbelievable.) TWC, the journal, has been putting out the equivalent of two books a year and this year they're doing THREE books. Fanlore is cited all over the place; it's becoming fandom's dictionary, fandom's memory. Open Doors has kicked into high gear now that the functionality to save large archives has been built. They're doing so much great work, not just with online fanworks but also analog works. And there's a ton of amazing people working to keep the whole thing going: volcom, development, finance, etc. A total labor of love. No ads. No profit. I mean, not to be whatever, but this was something we dreamed up in the basement, you know? So it is totally like a fanwork: does anybody remember that moment where the fantasies inside your head became this thing that you shared with other people? Because someone else wrote that fantasy down, or because you did? Yeah. It's just like that! WE MADE THIS. It's far from perfect. It's very much a WIP. But you know, having written a giant fannish WIP for a few years back in the late '90s, I can tell you I learned a lot about writing from doing it. I personally never made a giant nonprofit before, either. And I think it's turned out pretty well, all things considered: great projects made and sustained by hundreds of amazing volunteers and even more members and even more users. So, the pitch: Support the OTW. And please, also, take the OTW Community Survey: help the org brainstorm, leave feedback (concrit welcome!) Fan/Remix Video issue of TWC
So if I say so myself, there is so much good stuff in the Fan/Remix Video issue! I've seen people call it the vidding issue, and there is plenty of that, but there's also a fantastic curated exhibition of pre-digital anime music videos by Ian Roberts and political remixes by Jonathan McIntosh and queer remixes by Elisa Kresinger (including, yes, ok, many vids). The theoretical essays are at least in part about the ways in which remix is a form of writing, and Tisha Turk's essay talks about how remixers need to be seen not just as audience members, but as artists with their own audiences, while Kim Middleton's essay talks about how remix embodies so many of the values of the humanities. And seriously, there's a lot more--Star Wars fan edits, fan-made trailers, musical mashups of Madonna and Gaga, interviews, blah blah. Check it out! New Sherlock (BBC) story
Title: Up or Artistic Lush (8225 words) Author: Speranza Fandom: Sherlock BBC Pairing: Sherlock/John Summary: "12 across," John said, waving the folded newspaper.
